Tips To Keep Your Refrigerator In Top Shape

Posted on: 7 September 2017

A refrigerator is a necessary appliance in your home, so it's imperative to keep it working properly and in shape so your food stays cold in the refrigerator or frozen in the freezer. There are a few things you can do to keep your refrigerator in shape. See below for some of these tasks.

Don't Over-Stuff

A full refrigerator and freezer may make you feel better, but it can be too much for your refrigerator to handle. If the vents inside your refrigerator and freezer are blocked, it can prevent proper air flow meaning you'll have warm spots inside your refrigerator/freezer. Your refrigerator will work harder to keep it cool and can eventually cause it to breakdown.

Wipe Down And Inspect The Seals

The seals of your refrigerator can get filthy dirty from dust, pet hair and other everyday dander. The seals help keep the cool air inside your refrigerator, so if they aren't working properly it can cause warm spots and again a breakdown can eventually happen. Wipe down the seals of your refrigerator with a warm and soapy microfiber cloth or sponge. Wipe it clean and then dry it thoroughly.

Inspect the seals for any cracking or dry rotting. If you notice any damage at all, replace the seal with a new one purchased either on-line or from your local parts supplier. You can also have it replaced by a professional appliance repairman.

To check that the seals are working properly, place a piece of paper inside the door and close it. Try to pull it out. If it was easy to pull it out, you may have an issue with your seal. If you had to tug on it to get it out, your seals are still in good shape.

Vacuum The Coils

Take your vacuum cleaner and vacuum the bottom vent at the bottom of the refrigerator, then pull out your refrigerator and vacuum the coils at the back. This is an area that can accumulate with a lot of dust and other debris, so cleaning it should happen a few times per year. The coils help to keep your refrigerator cool, so if there is too much debris on them they cannot do their job properly.

Your refrigerator is an important appliance to have in your home and one you may have a difficult time living without. Take good care of your refrigerator and freezer to keep it working properly and in good shape. If you have any issues with your refrigerator or freezer call a professional repairman for help.
